TPH Brings 16th Center of Excellence to Northwest Ohio
TPH is pleased to announce the launch of its sixteenth Center of Excellence in Sylvania, OH. Student-athletes who attend the TPH-Sylvania CoE will train on and off the ice at Sylvania Tam-O-Shanter and enjoy TPH’s completely individualized, customized, blended education experience in an off-site academic space located within walking distance of the ice arena. TPH’s Sylvania Center of Excellence will be its first in the Buckeye State.
“We are very excited to bring our Study, Train, Play model to Northwest Ohio,” TPH CEO Nathan Bowen said. “In many ways, this announcement feels like a bit of homecoming for us when you consider that our very first CoE was launched about 55 miles up the road in Canton, MI back in 2014. Seven years and sixteen CoE’s later, here we are today, so fortunate to bring our model to a part of the country that is heavily populated with driven, goal-oriented student-athletes, in particular, Tier I and Tier II hockey players. We believe our Center of Excellence model will appeal not only to families in Northwest Ohio, but also in Southern Michigan, as well as the various Ohio markets that are within driving distance of Tam-O. We are extremely grateful to the many wonderful people we have been collaborating with in Sylvania over the past few months.”
For the Tier I and Tier II hockey players Bowen referenced, TPH’s on-ice training program is geared towards skills, habits, concepts and details opposed to team concepts and structure. Hockey players who attend the TPH-Sylvania Center of Excellence will do so during a typical school day and will receive high-level on and off-ice training while still being able to compete for their local club team. The model is open to male and female Tier I and Tier II hockey players in 6-12th grade.
“Our hope is that the Center of Excellence will power up hockey in Northwest Ohio and accelerate the speed at which local players in the area develop, whether they are A level, AA level or AAA in playing ability,” Bowen added. “Hockey players who attend the CoE get close to 300 hours of on and off-ice training throughout the course of a standard 36-week school year. They get to do this while receiving an NCAA-accredited, state-certified education and mentorship on the process of becoming an elite student-athlete. We are confident that families in Northwest Ohio will value the holistic approach we strive to take with our CoE model.”
Helping student-athletes become independent, self-starting college freshman, regardless of sport, is perhaps the most important piece of the “holistic approach” Bowen referenced. In partnership with Edmentum and Ohio statewide academic partner Quaker Digital Academy, the Center of Excellence’s unique academic learning model is designed to meet the demands of student-athletes who desire structure, discipline and accountability, but have a desire for a flexible program that allows them to pursue their sport and career goals without the fear of missing school. The “blended learning environment” shaped by TPH includes academics on demand, with 24/7, fully accessible NCAA accredited courseware and full-time instructors who are dedicated to the student-athletes across all Centers of Excellence. CoE attendees have access to their instructors as well as a virtual tutoring service, in the event academic assistance is needed after-hours or right on the spot during the CoE school day. A full-time Head of Academics will be on-site daily and will ensure that all student-athletes are held accountable, are studying in a positive learning environment and are receiving an experience that is tailored to when, where and how the individual learns best.

Cecil and Hart putting TPH student-athletes in a position to succeed
Nashville, TN – TPH Sports Dietitian, Breanna Cecil and Strength and Conditioning Coach, Staci Hart, have a key principle for their working relationship. That principle is communication. Their use of constant communication over the school year and the benefit of working closely together has shown that nutrition and strength-training coincide well together.
For this well-oiled machine to work, they need to have a game plan in place. “We start with a game plan, but then sometimes you need to adjust the plan with different types of programming that may emphasize power, speed, or conditioning based on what the athlete needs to improve upon. Sometimes this means incorporating even more injury prevention or corrective exercises as well. I like to modify as we go. This allows for specific needs of each student-athlete to be targeted,” Hart said.
Another thing that makes them work well together is their experience in their respective fields. Both Cecil and Hart have been in DI collegiate programs, so they know how those programs are structured and that is the atmosphere they want to deliver to the TPH program. Everything is planned out and accounted for with each student-athlete.

Hart graduated from The Ohio State University where she got her bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science. After that, she spent 2 years at Lipscomb University where she earned her master’s degree in Exercise and Nutrition Science. While at both Ohio State and Lipscomb, she interned and served as a Graduate Assistant with the Strength and Conditioning staff. After she received her Master’s, she became a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and has spent the last several years training Professional, Collegiate, Junior Level, and Youth Hockey Athletes.
Breanna Cecil works with TPH Center of Excellence student-athlete
Cecil is a Registered Dietitian and attended the University of Kentucky where she received her Bachelors in Dietetics and worked with the Football team under their Sports Dietitian. From there, she completed her master’s in nutrition at Texas Woman’s University and completed 1,200 hours of Supervised Practice for her Dietetic Internship. After earning her Supervised Practice, she was an intern at Vanderbilt University where she worked with the baseball, football and basketball teams. Cecil has also worked with numerous Division I athletes across the country in various sports.
In partnership, Cecil works with Jesse Brown, Chef at Eat Fresh Ready Meals, for some of the athletes to keep them fueled throughout their season. Since the start of the school year, Hart and Cecil have been tracking the progress of the TPH athletes and the progress speaks for itself. Of the 90 athletes that have trained with Cecil and Hart, here is some of the progress that 4 different athletes have made:

In total, Hart and Cecil’s 16U and 15U athletes have gained a total of 101 pounds of lean muscle mass and converted 123 pounds of body fat into muscle. That is a very strong feat considering it was all done in-season as opposed to off-season. The on-ice coaches have taken a notice to the progress as well. One on ice coach said, “Staci and Bre are a great combination. They work really well together understanding the student athletes and their needs and customizing plans to make sure we maximize their gains across the year. Our team this year significantly benefited from having them. Our lost-man days due to injury dramatically reduced across the season despite the fact that we played more games and I really put that back to them working together to make sure our team was moving in the right direction.”
“These results are a testament to how nutrition coupled with strength and conditioning can take you from an average athlete to an elite athlete,” Cecil said. “(Coach) Staci and I are in constant communication with each other. We have both been in D1 collegiate programs, so we know the structure and atmosphere we want to deliver to this hockey program. Everything is planned out and accounted for with each student-athlete”. Going forward, Cecil and Hart want to turn this program into one of the best in the country to help their student-athletes excel in their sport.
Total Package Hockey and Premier Ice Prospects Announce Open Registration for Smashville Girls Hockey Showcase
NASHVILLE, Tennessee – Total Package Hockey “TPH” and Premier Ice Prospects “PIP” join forces to support the Smashville Girls Hockey Showcase for Tier I Girls’ teams, 12U-14U-16U-19U in conjunction with the Smashville NCAA Women’s Hockey Showcase to be held over Thanksgiving every year!
“The Predators are creating an amazing event that will couple elite girls’ hockey with the collegiate tournament; providing girls the opportunity to play in a high-level tournament and see some of the top caliber Division-one teams in action,” said Kathy Pippy, PIP Girls Hockey Director. “PIP is excited to partner with another industry leader, TPH to establish the Smashville Girls Hockey Showcase as a highly-competitive, highly-scouted annual event over Thanksgiving weekend!”
Last month the Nashville Predators announced the formation of the Smashville NCAA Women’s Hockey Showcase in partnership with TPH and PIP, indicating the 2021 participating collegiate teams will be 2021 NCAA Championship qualifiers Boston College Eagles and Colgate Raiders, who will be joined by the Mercyhurst Lakers and the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers. In 2022 the participating teams will include 2021 NCAA Champion Wisconsin Badgers, NCAA Runners-up Northeastern Huskies and Penn State Lions and Princeton Tigers.
“The Nashville Predators continue to lead by example in hockey, but most importantly, they also continue to do so in the community,” Total Package Hockey CEO Nathan Bowen said. “This support of and investment in growing women’s and girl’s hockey is just another of the many examples of the Predators organization’s consistent commitment and actions. The 2021 edition of the Smashville Girls Hockey Showcase will take place November 26-28th, with the NCAA games occurring on the 26th and 27th. Boston College will play Colgate and Minnesota will play Mercyhurst on Friday, with the winners of those games facing off in the championship game Saturday afternoon and the losers playing for bronze.

TPH Grows Florida Footprint, Opens 2nd CoE in the Sunshine State
TPH is pleased to announce a partnership with the Florida Panthers to bring its Study, Train, Play Center of Excellence (CoE) academy model to aspiring-elite hockey players and figure skaters from across Southeast Florida for the 2021-2022 school year. The CoE model allows student-athletes to receive a completely individualized, customized, NCAA accredited education, sport-specific training, and mentorship, while still participating in their youth or club organizations. TPH presently operates a Center of Excellence in Estero, and its Coral Springs based CoE will be TPH’s fifteenth in the United States.
“On behalf of all of us in TPH, we are thrilled to be able to offer the Center of Excellence experience to student-athletes across Southeast Florida,” TPH CEO Nathan Bowen said. “We are beyond grateful to Keith Fine and the Panthers organization for trusting us to house a Center of Excellence in their facility. “We’re excited to partner with TPH in bringing an academy-style model to the Panthers IceDen,” Panthers IceDen General Manager Keith Fine said. “Our facility wanted to provide academic resources at the rink for our dedicated hockey players and figure skaters so they could feel comfortable dedicating time to both their academic and athletic careers. TPH and the Center of Excellence model allows that to happen.”

“As we all know, student-athletes have to be extremely dedicated to reach the highest levels in sport and in life,” Bowen added. “In many cases, reaching their goals requires flexibility on the academic side. Our model provides that. The CoE is the anti-one-size-fits-all educational and sport training program. Students study at their own pace and train to their own individual standard. We believe Southeast Florida families are going to quickly see the advantages and positive outcomes that come with the Center of Excellence model.”
Ryan Brindley serves as a Partner and Director of TPH’s Estero-based Center of Excellence, which reached capacity in its first year in operation. A staple in Florida youth hockey circles, Brindley believes Southeast Florida families will be impressed by what the CoE program has to offer. He also believes that families who would ordinarily need to look beyond their backyard for a high-level sport and education opportunity for their son or daughter, now have an “incentive” to keep their athletes living at home as long as possible.
“I have been proud to call Florida home for close to two decades,” Brindley said. “The quality of life that all of us get to enjoy as Florida residents is second-to-none. What I love about the Center of Excellence is that it allows our student-athletes to stay home, get high level training and get an education experience that prepares them for the more independent lifestyle they will live once they graduate to the university setting, all while enjoying the great benefits of living in the Sunshine State. TPH Appoints Jay Sprague to Lead Denver As Director
(Denver, CO – March 9, 2021) – TPH Colorado is excited to announce Jay Sprague as Director of Hockey – Operations for its Denver division. A product of the sports academy model himself, Sprague comes to TPH with a breadth of hockey experience that includes winning an NCAA DI National Championship, playing professionally, and coaching at both the youth and college levels.
“We’re honored to be able to have Jay join our team in Colorado,” said Executive Director, Jordan Pietrus. “Jay has a deep understanding of the game, great experience playing, coaching, and also in player development. However the most important piece that Jay has is a passion for sharing all of this knowledge with the next generation.”
Sprague has walked the path that most Center of Excellence students would like to take, preparing him perfectly to lead the student-athletes at TPH Denver. Sprague attended and played hockey for IMG Academy before moving on to a junior hockey career in the USHL. After playing a combined 90 games for the Chicago Steel and the Indiana Ice, Sprague earned an athletic scholarship at Michigan State University where he was a member of the 2007 NCAA National Championship team. During his time at Michigan State, he was a four-year letter winner and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Communications. After finishing college, Jay went on to play professionally in the ECHL and CHL before he eventually decided to transition from a career as a player to a career as a coach and mentor.
“It was an easy decision for me to make the move to coaching, and youth development is where I felt I could make the biggest impact,” said Sprague. “The game of hockey has given me so much and I’m fully committed to giving back as much as I possibly can.”
Most recently Sprague has served as the Director of Skills Development for Defense First Hockey School in Toronto. Working under the tutelage of former NHL blueliner, Mike Weaver, Sprague has had the opportunity to learn from one of the top defenseman coaches in North America and has spent time coaching some of the top players in Canada. Sprague has also devoted time coaching both male and female players throughout the youth and college ranks. Starting with an assistant coaching role at Ryerson University in Toronto, he proceeded to lead teams at SUNY Cortland in upstate New York, and then served as the Girl’s Head Coach at Nichols School a prep school in Buffalo, NY. Now as a member of the TPH family, he’s thrilled to have the opportunity to empower the next generation of up and coming hockey players in Colorado.

TPH Denver Welcomes New Academic Success Coach
(Denver, CO – March 9, 2021) – TPH Denver is pleased to announce that Kristen Bowness will be joining its Center of Excellence as an Academic Success Coach. With more than 10 years of professional teaching experience and a background in sports program management, Kristen will be a valuable addition to the TPH Denver team. She will play a critical role in upholding the TPH standard of exceeding expectations in athletics, academics, and community enrichment.
Making a positive impact on the lives of student-athletes is something Kristen has been dedicated to throughout her professional career. After earning a Bachelor’s degree from The University of Arizona she went on to complete a Master’s degree in Sport Management & Athletic Administration. From there she became a licensed teacher and spent 6 years teaching in the Arizona school system where she was honored as the Teacher of the Year.
“TPH has created such a cohesive environment for kids to develop as both students and athletes,” said Kristen. “I’m excited to immerse myself in the culture of the CoE, and I look forward to the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the students I work with.”
For the past six years, Kristen has been working as the Community Hockey Manager for the Tampa Bay Lightning. She was responsible for helping to grow the game in the local community on a number of different levels while she also stayed active as an educator.

TPH Announces Launch of Cutting Edge Hockey IQ Service
TPH is proud to announce the launch of TPH IQ – hockey IQ development for the aspiring elite hockey player! The game today is faster and more sophisticated than ever, and TPH believes it is our responsibility to not only train our player to be great with the puck, but also without the puck! In partnership with The Prospect Exchange, TPH’s professional network of coaches will be providing hockey IQ development for hockey players nationwide, through shift video breakdown and statistical analysis.
TPH IQ will focus on 3 main things: patterns, pressure, and position. Our coaches will help you recognize patterns and ques while watching your film. They will also talk about how to read pressure and make quicker, more educated decisions based on that pressure. Finally, your coach will talk to you about your position and how you can be more effective in your position on your team.

How does the program work?
- Players can sign up for a 3 or 5 game TPH IQ package with a coach of their choosing.

Iceberg Sports Analytics and The Prospect Exchange form partnership

Widelski adds Leadership and Infrastructure to TPH Team
TPH is proud to announce that Riitta Widelski has joined the company in a newly created position titled Manager of People, Culture and Development. In her role, Riitta will be responsible for strengthening Human Resources-related infrastructure as well as working alongside TPH’s executive leadership team to improve synergy across the company, and innovate new ways for its team members to grow as leaders.
“Riitta is detailed, experienced and most importantly, passionate about her work,” TPH CEO Nathan Bowen said. “With our company growing at an accelerated pace, we felt it would be important to identify someone like Riitta to bring onto our team to help us improve what is currently in place, but also help us prepare to take another step forward. We are also excited about what Riitta is going to do to help our people improve. A native of Finland, Riitta brings 15 years of experience managing employee relations activities, employee hiring and training, leadership training and mentoring, as well as first-hand work in administration, compliance and policy implementation to TPH. She received Master of Human Resources and International Master of Business Administration degrees from the University of South Carolina. Two TPH Alumni Nominated for Hobey Baker Award
The 2021 Hobey Baker Nominees were announced Monday and TPH is excited to see both Declan Carlile and Zach Solow as two of the 50 nominees.
Named after Hobart Amory Hare Baker, the Hobey Baker Award is considered the top award in all of college hockey. The honor is bestowed on the student-athlete who exhibits strength and character, both on and off the ice; while additionally contributing to the integrity of the program, displaying outstanding skills in all phases of the game and shows great scholastic achievement, and sportsmanship.
Just understanding the type of character and drive it takes to be considered for this award, it is an honor to be nominated. Now factor in that there over 4,300 NCAA Division I hockey players, which statistically puts these players in the top one percent.
In his second season at Merrimack, Carlile has displayed his ability on the ice leading Hockey East and second in the nation in blocked shots while also leading his team in plus/minus. Coming off a season where he was named to to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team, the Business Administration major looks to help his team move up the Hockey East standings. Carlile is a TPH Detroit Summer Progression Program alumni.
As a senior at Northeastern, Solow was named captain this season and leads the team in scoring (11gp, 6g, 7a, 13p). Last season was memorable for Solow who was awarded the Beanpot MVP helping Northeastern win their third consecutive Beanpot title. Solow looks to continue helping the #14 Northeastern Huskies climb in the rankings. Solow is a Nashville Jr Predators alumni.
