Family Sports Center to House Colorado CoE
Total Package Hockey is pleased to announce that it’s seventh Center of Excellence will be housed inside Family Sports Center in Centennial, CO, a south suburb of Denver. The two-ice sheet, multi-purpose facility offers many amenities to its visitors and is also the training facility of the Colorado Avalanche.
“Partnering with Family Sports is a great avenue for us as we strive to do things The TPH Way at our Colorado Center of Excellence,” TPH-Colorado Partner Angelo Ricci said. “We love the quality of the venue, love the location and believe in the programs Family Sports runs to appeal to hockey players of all ages and abilities. Above all, what we are most excited about is the commitment the leadership of the facility and South Suburban Parks and Recreation is making to the CoE model. They want to see the CoE concept succeed in the Denver area and today is proof of that.”
In addition to providing student-athletes the opportunity to skate on the same ice as the NHL’s Avs, Family Sports will provide classroom space which will enable TPH to create the customized learning experience it promotes in the CoE model. Student-athletes will perform a portion of their off-ice training across the parking lot in the 45,000 square foot South Suburban Sports Dome and will have the opportunity to pick from a customized, TPH athlete-friendly lunch menu inside Avalanche Grill. The landscape of Family Sports Center will allow TPH to create a mini-campus within its new Centennial home.
“Total Package Hockey’s vision aligns with South Suburban’s culture of providing quality experiences to our community,” said Family Sports General Manager Bill Dobbs. “We feel fortunate to be the home of such a high-caliber program.
Family Sports Assistant General Manager and Director of Travel Hockey Randy Murphy echoed Dobbs’ sentiment.
“We are excited to partner with Total Package Hockey and the Center of Excellence,” Murphy said. “The nationally recognized program will provide unique opportunities for our local community and athletes who are committed to success on and off the ice.”
Prospective student-athletes and their families are invited to join Ricci and the TPH leadership team for its second open house, and first from its new home inside Family Sports Center, on Monday, April 29 at 7:00 PM. To RSVP for the event, please click here.
Space will be limited for the inaugural 2019-2020 school year, so interested student-athletes and their families are encouraged to apply to the Center of Excellence by clicking here. Doing so will allow the prospect to secure the opportunity to be part of the Study – Train – Play experience in Centennial this fall.

Six TPH Detroit CoE student-athletes win prestigious World Selects Invitational title
he seventh annual World Selects Invitational took place in Philadelphia last week, and some TPH Center of Excellence student-athletes returned to Detroit with some hardware.
Making up a significant portion of the DraftDay Black roster, the TPH boys captured the Under-15 championship at the tournament, which featured more than 600 of the best ’04 birth-year players in the world.
Congrats to the CoE student-athletes:
Nick Burke
Hunter Brzustewicz
Zach Filak
Lane Hutson
Nathan Lewis
Rutger McGroarty
The WSI tournament featured 27 players from the ’04 birth-year who have Division 1 verbal commitments, as well as 49 WHL Bantam Draft selections. Since its inception, WSI-Philadelphia has welcomed 88 NHL Draft picks, 400 college committed players and more than 1,000 CHL Draft picks while hosting players from 15 different countries.
Outside of one loss to Western Canada Selects on May 6, the DraftDay Black squad recorded eight wins on the road to the title. They topped the East Coast Selects 5-3 in the championship game.
Draftday Black out-scored the opposition 40-29 over the course of the nine games.
“WSI Philly is one of the best tournaments these young men will ever have a chance to play in as a youth hockey player,” said head coach Jimmy McGroarty, a TPH Detroit player development coach and mentor. “In a tournament such as this, with a ton of great players and teams, it becomes a grind. Each game is as competitive as the next, so if you are not ready it could be an early exit. We had one blip against Western Canada, which I believe it woke us up as a team and made the boys realize we need everyone contributing in different ways.
“I’m proud of this team in their ability to get better and better with each game. We had a mix of players from Canada and the United States – it was fun to see them grow as a family throughout the week. We had six players from TPH, as well as a couple of other players that played in the Michigan area in Brando Di’Antonio, Cam VanSickle, as well. I would also like to thank all the players and families for an awesome week, as well as the our other coaches in Rob Hutson and Dave D’amizzio.”
Rutger McGroarty matched a WSI-Philadelphia record with 19 points in the five-day event, as the Notre Dame commit registered 10 goals and nine assists en route to being named tournament MVP.
Classmate and teammate Lane Hutson was named the tournament’s best defenseman, after the Boston University commit logged one goal and 15 assists for 16 points over the nine games played.

Detroit CoE alum Jake Veri talks about attending Blue Jackets’ development camp
Jake Veri will be the answer to a TPH Center of Excellence trivia question in the coming years.
He is the first student-athlete to receive an invitation to a NHL team development camp right out of the CoE.
The long-time Detroit CoE member was invited to the Columbus Blue Jackets development camp last week, and upon his return, he said it was a remarkable experience.
“When I got there, it was kind of surreal,” said Veri, a Northville, Mich., native. “Being one of the younger guys at the camp, and all of the older guys there, guys you look up to, they were all great guys. They helped me along, and they teach you how much the details mean and all the little things and just what it takes. Every day, you have to be putting work in, or somebody’s going to pass you. It really was a reality check in the fact that you think you’re doing enough, and then you go there and you see what these NHL guys who are already in the league and what they do every day just to stay in the league – the skills and the skating was phenomenal and it was a lot of fun. I enjoyed every minute of it.”
Veri, who has signed with the BCHL’s Chilliwack Chiefs for the upcoming 2019-2020 season, was a free-agent invite to the camp. Putting on a Blue Jackets jersey and the corresponding red and blue gear was a dream come true, despite one small hang-up for the 5-foot-7 forward.
“There really aren’t words for it. Granted, I’m a little bit of a smaller guy, so the gloves and the pants felt a little big, felt like I was wearing my dad’s gear, but it was an amazing feeling. Nothing like it. It makes you more driven to get there, because you see what it’s like and you’re one step closer to every hockey player’s dream when you put that stuff on.”
The five-year CoE alum learned of his camp invite from a phone call with the Blue Jackets’ player development staff; when he told his family, they were ecstatic.
“Obviously they were extremely happy because they’ve seen the work I put in these last five years, going to TPH and how many times growing up I’ve been passed up on because of my size and everything. Just seeing that I have to keep going – it hasn’t fully paid off, it’s a stepping stone and a pat on the back for what I do every day.”
As far as being the first CoE student-athlete to be invited to a camp right out of school, Veri said he’s just honored to be mentioned alongside some of his former classmates.
“It’s amazing. The guys who have went to the CoE, we’ve had draft picks come out of there and they produce just unbelievable players every year. It’s an amazing feeling – Blade Jenkins, Bode Wilde, Will MacKinnon, they have just produced hockey player after hockey player, and it’s just nice to be a part of that group.”
Veri said he’s very excited to seize his opportunity with Chilliwack in the fall.
“Signing Day was insane, like everything else lately. It’s nice to go somewhere where you’re wanted, somewhere where they understand your style of play. They have an amazing coaching staff, coaches who really care about your development and really care about you as a person. I’m really excited to get out there, it’s a beautiful place to be on top of an awesome place to play. It really is amazing.”
And he said he is incredibly grateful for the help from the TPH staff in Detroit throughout his hockey journey.
“Everything I’ve done, on ice, off ice, mental, physical, they were always there. Anything I needed, and if you put in the time, they’ll be there until your last day on the ice. They truly help you in every way and they’ve helped me in ways I can’t even explain, because just being there at the school, you see their dedication and how much they really want to make hockey players, and not just hockey players but good people. At the end of the day, a huge chunk of anything I’ve ever done in my hockey life is because of them.”
TPH to Utilize 3 Day On-Ice Training Model in Colorado
Total Package Hockey is pleased to announce that it will utilize its first ever three-day on-ice training format in its Colorado Center of Excellence, housed inside Family Sports. Student-athletes will train off the ice five days per week at either the South Suburban Sports Dome, or at Landow Sports Performance, under the director of Loren Landow and his first-rate team of coaches. Student-athletes will have the option to touch the ice four days each week, but the specific CoE on-ice curriculum will be adjusted for Colorado, to fit within three days, allowing for better rest and recovery, vital to all hockey players, specifically the ‘AAA,’ ‘AA’ and competitive ‘A’ level travel players within TPH-Colorado’s target demographic.
“TPH understands that young hockey players in Colorado, especially those who play at the Tier I level, face a great deal of travel to and from their games,” Director of Hockey-Operations Jordan Pietrus said. “Adopting an approach that centers on three days of on-ice training versus the standard four days means that the student-athletes who attend our CoE and play ‘AAA’ hockey will be sharper, more rested and therefore more focused for all CoE training sessions as well as practices and games with their club teams. For those student-athletes who have a light week travel-wise or find they have the energy to touch the ice four days, we will offer a completely individualized on-ice opportunity on the fourth day. But we are adapting the actual focused curriculum to three days to accommodate the Colorado player and the demands he or she faces.”
One of the staples of the Center of Excellence model is to offer a firm but flexible approach in its efforts to assist each individual to Study, Train and Play to his or her fullest potential. Pietrus believes the decision to condense the model in Colorado is a sign of TPH’s commitment to that philosophy.
“The CoE model has aided in the on and off-ice development of over 30 Division I players and has seen four CoE alumni get drafted into the NHL,” Pietrus noted. “Our goal in Colorado from a hockey-standpoint, is to apply our training model and add to that number in time. Training three days on the ice gives us the best opportunity to help our hockey players achieve their goals while doing right by the market.”

Total Package Hockey is proud to announce the additions of Kory Karlander and David Van Drunen to the Grand Rapids Center of Excellence for the upcoming 2019-2020 school year.
In their new roles of player development coaches and mentors, the two bring a combined 32 years of professional hockey playing experience to the growing staff at the new CoE at the Southside Ice Arena on Michigan’s west side.
“Both Kory and David have a passion for helping the next generation of hockey players, and we’re excited to have them join our team for our inaugural school year,” said TPH GR director of hockey Joel Kwiatkowski. “From playing such extensive professional careers and now both coaching in the youth ranks, they know from experience what it takes to reach the highest levels of hockey, and how to communicate those lessons to our young student-athletes.”
Karlander, a co-hockey director for the Fox Motors Hockey Club, coaches two youth teams after a 18-year professional hockey career. A Northern Michigan alum, Karlander played for the Grand Rapids Griffins in five different seasons, and seven seasons with the Kalamazoo Wings. Other hockey stops for Karlander included the Detroit Vipers (IHL) and two years with the Belfast Giants in the British Ice Hockey Superleague.
Van Drunen, a coach of Fox Motors midget teams, played for the Prince Albert Raiders of the WHL for junior hockey before embarking on a 14-year professional career that brought him to Michigan.
He played five seasons for the Griffins, and four for the Muskegon Fury, before concluding his career with the Odessa Jackalopes in 2010-11.
Along the way, Van Drunen also played for the Detroit Vipers and the Saginaw Gears as he made his way around the Great Lakes State.
Both work for the Southside Ice Arena, extending their roots in the Grand Rapids hockey community.
